Too rusted to save? How we call it before we blast

Every week someone texts us photos of a rust-streaked excavator or a roll-off container with a brown floor and asks the same thing: is this worth fixing? Here is the exact framework we use to answer, including the jobs we turn down.

My excavator is covered in rust, is it too far gone to sandblast?

Almost never. Rust that looks catastrophic on a machine is usually surface or scale rust, and both strip clean and take primer beautifully. In fifteen years around heavy iron we have seen maybe one machine in twenty that was genuinely past saving, and every one of those had holes you could see through, on a dump body floor, a container bottom, or a wasted weld zone. Color tells you nothing. A skid steer that is solid orange from sitting in a Yonkers yard for two winters can be structurally perfect, while a machine with decent paint can hide a rotted belly pan. What matters is whether the steel still has its thickness, and that is something you can check yourself in ten minutes before you spend a dollar. The distinction that decides everything: rust on steel is a coating problem, rust that has eaten through steel is a fabrication problem. We fix the first kind. A welder fixes the second kind, and then we blast and prime whatever got repaired.

One honest caveat about pitting: blasting removes the rust inside the pits but cannot put steel back. A pitted excavator bucket that still has its edge thickness gets primed with a high-build coat and goes back to work. Pitting concentrated at a boom weld or a quick-coupler mount is a different conversation, and we will tell you to get a fabricator to look before we spray anything over it.

How do I check my own machine before calling anyone?

Grab a flat screwdriver and a hammer and spend ten minutes at the machine. This is the same walkaround we do when the rig arrives.

  1. Pick at the worst spot. If the screwdriver flakes off paint and rust but stops at hard steel, that is scale, and it strips fine. If the tip sinks in or punches through, you have section loss.
  2. Tap the flats. Healthy plate rings when you tap it with a hammer. Thin, rust-wasted steel answers with a dull thud. Walk the sound across the panel and mark where it changes.
  3. Check where water sits. Horizontal surfaces rot first: dump body floors, container bottoms, trailer decks, the top of a plow blade frame. A machine can look fine at eye level and be gone underneath.
  4. Look hard at welds and mounts. Rust along a structural weld, a boom foot, or spring hangers matters far more than a rusty panel. Those zones carry the load.
  5. Separate frame from skin. A rusted-through fender is cosmetic. A rusted-through crossmember is not. Price the fix by what the part does, never by how ugly it looks.

Repair or replace: the math we walk owners through

Our rule of thumb is simple: refinishing pays when blast, repairs, and paint together land under about a third of replacement cost, and it usually does. A mid-size excavator strips and primes for $2,000 to $3,500 against a six-figure machine. A 30-yard roll-off container refinishes for $800 to $1,500 while a new can runs $5,000 or more, so a hauler in the Bronx corridor can redo three cans for less than buying one. A salt-eaten plow blade and frame set comes back for $600 to $1,200 against several thousand new. The math flips when plate work stacks up: a dump body needing a full new floor plus blasting can approach a used body swap, and we will say so instead of taking the job. Red flags when you hire a blasting contractor

  • No containment plan.Anyone who shrugs at where the spent media and old coating dust will go is planning to leave it in your yard or your neighbor’s.
  • No answer on old paint. Coatings applied before the 1978 residential ban, and industrial paints well after it, can carry lead. OSHA’s lead rules and EPA’s lead program exist for exactly this. A pro tests or assumes lead on old ornamental iron and structural steel; a hack blasts it into the air.
  • Actual silica sand in the hopper. Modern outfits blast with crushed glass, slag, garnet, or soda. Beach sand is a lung hazard the industry moved past decades ago.
  • Bare steel left overnight. Fresh-blasted steel flash rusts within hours. If primer the same day is not part of the plan, the blast was wasted money.
  • No published numbers. A vague hourly rate with no range and no mobilization figure is how a $1,500 job becomes a $4,000 invoice.

Who we are not the right fit for

Straight answers cut both ways. Skip us if your piece has structural section loss that needs certified weld repair, since the fabricator comes first and we come second. Skip us for car body panels and thin sheet metal, which want a body shop with a soda cabinet, and for small hobby parts, where a cabinet-blasting shop beats a mobile rig on price.
